Sant'Angelo in Vado: Molto bella
27 - 28 March 2001

Location

Sant'Angelo in Vado, Les Marches, Italy.

Using the car I had rented in Pesaro, I drove all the way to Sant'Angelo in Vado. On the way I made brief stops in Fermiagno and Urbania.

Angelo is the last town of any importance on the E78. It's a pretty little town with lots of winding alleys and surprising vistas.

When I saw these waterfalls I just had to stop and take a picture. The place is called Fermignano.

I also stopped in Urbania, not to be confused with Urbino. This is from the ducal palace. It's very harmonious with the gallery around the courtyard. The palazzo was used as a library, museum and music school. Someone was practicing a classical piece on the trumpet while I was there.

Entering Sant'Angelo in Vado from the east gives this view of the curving main street, Courso Garibaldi.

The old town was full of alleys like this. It was a very atmospheric place.

Entering from the western side, you come through this arch, Porta Albani. For a triumphal arc it is rather small. On the other hand, it's size fits the proportions of the town.

Inside the arch there is anti-fascist artwork. This one is a Mussolini slogan spattered with blood.

The keys to the awful hotel in Sant'Angelo. The decor was very seventies and they seemed to be afraid of letting light in.

Another nook in Sant'Angelo. There are a lot of public fountains like this one in Italian cities. This one was behind the civic centre. Notice the reflection of a window on the pavement.

In a slightly more contemporary part of the town, I found this pink house with its intriguiging frieze. Take a closer look!

Much more drab is the post office. The sign that says it's a post office looks very much like old bus stops in Germany.

Looking out of town towards the east along the River Metauro the view is very rural. You can see the mountains rise to the south.

On a sign I had found a reference to a path from Sant'Angelo to Torre Metola. Looking for it south of the town's cemetary, I found this abandoned farmstead.
