Metola: My First Torre
28 March 2001

Location

Metola outside Sant'Angelo in Vado, Les Marches, Italy.

From Sant'Angelo I drove south a little bit to get to the trailhead for Torre Metola.

This region of Italy is full of torre, towers that are remains of keeps built in medieval times. The Castello of Metola was built in the eleventh century by Beata Margherita. The tower is being restored. There are new windows in it and there are excavations in front of it.

The trees have been cut down on the sides of the mountains here, causing a lot of erosion.

As you can see not much grows on the eroded mountain sides. With the grey sand it looks like a moon landscape.

Higher up on the hill, there were pleasant beach forests. The trees were just coming into leaf and the path was lined with primroses and violets.

The torre itself is at the top of the mountain at 704 m above sea level. You can see the dark clouds rolling in behind it. Fifteen minutes later it started to rain and thunder. If it hadn't been for the thunder I would also have visited the nearby chapel to Beata Margherita.
Having safely come down without being hit by lightning, I took one last picture of the tower from below the agriturismo establishment Le Caselle.
