Christmas Common: Undulations
8 July 2001

Location

Christmas Common, Buckinghamshire, OS 171

Almost 4 months later the details of this walk are pretty sketchy. But I'm pretty sure I took one of the paths that go parallell to Holland Ridge Lane all the way down to Pishill and then Holland Ridge Lane back to the village.

Weather

Overcast but warm.

A stone trough that isn't used any more shelters under some oaks.

I had a picnic and this is the view from where I was sitting on the ground.

This part of the Chilterns has a lot of undulating fields of grain. There are a number of pictures that show these in different configurations.

The edge of the field hugs the contour line.

Looking across it we see the next ridge.

As so often in the Chiltern it's ridge, after ridge, after ridge. It's part of why I like this landscape.

Looking head-on at one of the higher hills.

The contrast between shorthaired and longhaired grain is evident in this picture.

A shot of just longhaired grain for my textures page.

Later on the path passed through a maize field. The wind caused a pattering sound like rain. I was constantly holding out my hand to feel the first drops falling.

Holland Ridge Lane is very green and leafy at this time of year.

In a glade, foxgloves grow along the edges.

More foxgloves backed by ferns.

At the edge of the woods a plant that requires more nitrogen - willow herb. Anyone who has seen these before knows that the colour is actually much more vivid.

A closer look at the elegant spires.
